How to Migrate from Evernote to SimplyBoard
A complete guide to migrating your notes from Evernote.
Evernote was great once. Maybe it still is for some people. But if you're here, you're probably ready for something simpler, faster, and more private.
Good news: migrating from Evernote is straightforward. This guide walks you through the entire process.
Before You Start
- You'll need the Evernote desktop app for export
- Create a SimplyBoard account first
- Set aside 15-20 minutes for migration
Migration Steps
- Export from Evernote · Select notes → File → Export → Choose HTML or ENEX format.
- Convert to Markdown (optional) · Use a converter tool for cleaner imports, or import HTML directly.
- Review and clean up · Remove duplicates and outdated notes before importing.
- Import to SimplyBoard · Use our import tool to bring in your files as searchable entries.
- Verify and organize · Check your imported entries and add tags if desired.
Detailed Walkthrough
Step 1: Export from Evernote
Open the Evernote desktop app. Select the notes you want to export (Cmd+A or Ctrl+A for all notes in a notebook). Go to File → Export Notes.
You have two format options:
- ENEX · Evernote's native format, preserves more metadata
- HTML · Universal format, easier to work with
We recommend HTML for simplicity. If you want to preserve notebook structure, export each notebook separately.
Step 2: Convert to Markdown (Optional)
If you want cleaner imports, you can convert your HTML files to Markdown first. Tools like Pandoc or online converters can do this automatically.
This step is optional · SimplyBoard can handle HTML content directly.
Step 3: Import to SimplyBoard
In SimplyBoard, open settings and select "Import." Choose your exported files. Each note becomes a separate entry, fully encrypted and searchable.
What Gets Preserved
- All text content
- Basic formatting (bold, italic, lists)
- Links
What About Attachments?
Evernote exports include attached files. SimplyBoard focuses on text content, so attachments won't be imported. Consider moving important attachments to a file storage service like Dropbox or Google Drive.
Cleaning Up
Use this migration as an opportunity to declutter. Most people have years of accumulated notes they'll never look at again. Be ruthless · import only what you actually need.
